On Tuesday morning, January 17, 2023, the Houston Dynamo FC and Shell Energy announced a stadium naming rights agreement. It marks the fourth time in 11 years that the stadium has undergone a name change.

Opening in 2012, BBVA Compass Bank won the original naming rights of the stadium. The bank signed a 10 year, 20 million dollar dal as part of the agreement. Over the last decade, the home of the Houston Dynamo FC and Houston has under the previous agreement been known as BBVA Compass Bank Stadium, BBA Stadium, PNC Stadium, and now Shell Energy.

One reason for the name change is the organization's desire to be more environmentally friendly. They are pursuing integrated energy and decarbonization solutions at the venue. The prominent signage at the north end of the stadium will be the most focal point.

The name change is just one of the many changes coming the venue in 2023. Among the other changes are an all-inclusive air condition club on the east concourse and new breathable mesh seating.

Houston fans will get their game experience at the newly named Shell Energy Stadium on March 18th when the Houston Dynamo host in-state rival Austin FC in the 2023 home opener.
