Houston Dash Maria Sanchez goal ranked #8 in soccer this weekend
By Louis Roesch
Houston Dash forward Maria Sanchez doesn't score a lot of goals but when she does, she makes them count. The Mexican international's left footed banger helped lift the Dash to a 1-1 draw on Sunday night against Angel City FC.
The ESPN+ show Futbol Americas ranked her goal the eighth best goal of the weekend. It was the only NWSL goal to find its way into the Top 10 Goals of the Weekend. Sanchez's second goal of the season came in the 42nd minute off a short corner.
Despite giving up the equalizer early in the second half, Sanchez and the Houston Dash nearly had the go ahead marker on a couple of occasions. Just a minute after Angel City FC's tying goal, Sanchez ran onto a ball and let loose with low left footed shot that forced a spectacular save off the counter. In the 59th minute, it was Sanchez again. Her curling corner found the head of Natalie Jacobs inside the six yard box. Her header banged off the crossbar and caromed out of play.
The Dash travel to meet the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, September 17th in a match that has playoff implications written all over it. Houston sits just two points from the top of the table and three points in front of Chicago. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm CT.
